Choosing accommodation with kids – Rainbow Toast
Nov 192011

Finding accommodation when travelling solo or as a couple is easy. Usually you can be very flexible with your time and can happily stay for a couple of nights in an absolute dive that you stumble across after a long flight, without any problems.

Kids have little bodies that need regular sleep, for more hours than adults. They can be almost impossible to get out of the door each morning without copious planning and prodding. They usually function better when they have regular meals. They tend to like to know where they will be staying and what comes next. And parents – as much as they love their offspring – may find that they want to set up areas where people can get away from each other if they just need space.

For us, this meant that we looked for rooms that had at least a kitchenette and preferably had doors that the kids could shut on us and that we could shut on the kids. We tried to avoid hotel rooms, as it would have been too expensive to book adjoining rooms, and we would have otherwise been all jammed together in a room with two queen beds and not much else. This meant that we looked for short-stay apartments.

As we had in the past, we relied on Tripadvisor to help us decide the areas where we wanted to stay and to look at comments about specific accommodation.  Once we had an idea of where we wanted to stay we used a variety of online accommodation booking sites – like kayak.com, expedia.com, wotif.com, easytobook.com and ratestogo. We didn’t really have a favourite, just searched online to find the best price for the accommodation that we were after. One site was not consistently cheaper than the other.

We used waytostay.com to book accommodation in Paris and Barcelona.
